A Short Website FAQ

So, the page is designed, now what?
Now the page is ready to be placed on the World Wide Web. This is accomplished by 'renting' space on a computer which is permanently connected to the internet, called a server or host. Your site has an internet address, called an URL, by which visitors can access it. The Scribe Digital Design can host your site for you, or assist you with finding a suitable hosting service.

Ok, what about this address, and those 'domain names?'
Internet addresses are actually numeric, but are represented by the server, or domain name, and the location of the page within that server. For a business, registering your own domain name is highly recommended. This allows you to give your site a descriptive, easy to remember address, such joeswidgets.com. That name is uniquely yours, and cannot be used by anyone else. (Of course, you cannot use a name someone else has already registered. Without your own domain name, your address would be something like this: www.ahostingservice.net/users/home/joeswidgets/index.html .
We can assist you with domain name registration if desired.

Besides the design services, what other charges can I expect, what else can I expect to pay for my web page?
The hosting service, which you rent space from, will charge for the space you use, and in some cases, the number of hits your site gets. Most now charge a flat monthly rate for average size sites, with prices ranging from about $20 a month to upwards of $200 a month. There are several good hosting services available in the $20 range, and many offer discounts for prepays. We offer several hosting plans designed to fit any budget.

Additionally, if you choose to register your own domain name, there is a fee paid to the company (Network Solutions in most cases) which assigns the names. This fee is $35 annually.

How will people find my site?
Sites are found in a variety of ways: word of mouth, listing on business cards, in advertisements, etc. Perhaps the most frequent way, however, is by the use of internet search engines. Your site needs to be submitted to these, and there are design techniques which can help optimize your site, resulting in higher placement on these search engines. We can take care of this for you.

Can't anyone do a web page these days? Why should I pay you to do it?
There are several software packages available which allow the novice to design a web site. The Web is full of information about HTML coding, graphics design, marketing your site, etc. So yes, anyone can do a web page. But many people do not have the time nor inclination to learn this, and prefer to have it done by someone who already knows how, who knows the tricks of the trade, and who can get their site up and running quickly. Those who want to try it on their own are encouraged to do so, it can be a rewarding experience; those who prefer not to should contact us.
